Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow.  Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead.  Walk beside me and be my friend.

~ Albert Camus (Also attributed to Maimonidies)

Courage, it would seem, is nothing less than the power to overcome danger, misfortune, fear, injustice, while continuing to affirm inwardly that life with all its sorrows is good; that everything is meaningful even if in a sense beyond our understanding; and that there is always tomorrow.

~Dorothy Thompson

Recently the Save Our Seas Foundation took home the most prestigious award in natural history filmmaking — the Panda Award — for its campaign film “Rethink the Shark.”  The film features a summer’s day on a crowded beach with families splashing and playing in the ocean.  The scene turns ominous as a woman shrieks and the crowd panics.  There is a stampede as people scramble to shore and a baby is almost trampled in the process.  Then the bone-chilling image of a shark fin approaches, but wait!  Is that really a shark fin?  No, actually it is the triangular edge of a toaster.  “Last year 791 people were killed by faulty toasters.  Only 4 by sharks.  Rethink the Shark.”  Genius.

~ Making Waves, the National Publication of the Surfrider Foundation, Volume 25, No. 1, February  ’09
